Please follow these settings to ensure OBS works seamlessly with Learnyst Live.

Below are the key points you need to be aware of:

  • Set your OBS base resolution to 1280x720 & video output resolution to 852X480 (if you have higher upload speed, increase the resolution)
  • Your internet upload speed must be >2MBPS to do seamless live streaming. (check your speed here

For live streaming:

  • With Web-cam: Use 30 FPS & resolution: 1280x720 & internet speed >5mbps
  • With screen-share: Use 5FPS & resolution: 960x540 & internet speed>2mbps

Below we have covered step by step, how you can set your resolution

Settings to setup OBS with Learnyst Live: Read

To set up OBS seamlessly with Leanyst Live, we recommend you to do the below changes in the settings menu. Click settings & open it.

General Tab:

No changes. Leave default

Stream Tab:

Copy the learnyst server & stream keys from admin dashboard when you start your live classes.

Output Tab

  • Change Output mode to advanced
  • In Streaming Tab select encoder. Encoders are different for Windows and Mac PC. If hardware encoder is available, select hardware encoder(NVENC/H264 encoder for windows and Apple VT H264 hardware encoder for mac).
  • Else select x264 encoder
  • Un-check “Enforce streaming service encoder settings.”
  • Enable “Rescale Output” and select “960 x 540

For Apple Hardware encoder below are the settings:

  • Change bitrate to 1500 kbps. If you select higher resolution then you can increase this. But make sure that you have very good upload bandwidth
  •  Limit maximum bitrate to 1500 kbps
  • Change maximum bitrate window to 1 sec
  • Change key frame interval to 2
  • Select use B-frames

For Windows Hardware encoder below are the settings:

  • Change bit-rate to 1500 kbps. If you select a higher resolution, then you can increase this. But make sure that you have very good upload bandwidth >2mbps
  •  Limit maximum bitrate to 1500 kbps
  • Others Keep it default.

Pro tip:
Set your video bit rate to 1500kbps only if your internet upload speed is >2MBPS
The general rule is your video bitrate must be <your internet upload speed
You can check your internet speed at fast.com

For x264 encoder below are the settings

  • Rate control should be CBR
  •  Limit bitrate to 1500 kbps
  • Change key frame interval to 2
  • Change CPU Usage preset to “veryfast”
  • Set tune to “zerolatency”

Audio Tab:

Set sample rate to 44.1 kHZ. Other settings leave default

Video Tab:

  • Set base Resolution to 1280x720
  • Set Output Resolution to 852x480. If you increase resolution you need to increase bandwidth and also make sure that you have very good upload bandwidth
  • Set downscale filter to Bicubic
  • Change FPS as below.
  • FPS=5 or 10 : For Live classes which are done using screen sharing 5-10 FPS is enough. This will have smooth streaming for students also and also the bandwidth requirements will be less.
  • FPS=24 : For Live classes which are done using webcam or using external camera. If FPS is increased we need to set the bandwidth accordingly and also make sure that you have very good upload bandwidth speed.

Note-1: For FPS 24/30 and resolution of 1280*720, 5-7 Mbps upload bandwidth is required

Note-2: For FPS 5/10 and resolution of 960*540, 2-3 Mbps upload bandwidth is required

When live class is streaming we need to monitor the below :

  1. In OBS Tool
  2. FPS -> Should be always same as the FPS we configured.Should never drop
  3. Bandwidth -> Should never go to yellow or red
  4. Frame drops -> Should be 0
