Learn how Learnyst’s authorized DRM protection using Google Widevine, Microsoft PlayReady, and Apple FairPlay keeps your course videos safe from downloads, screen recording, and unauthorized sharing
Understanding Learnyst DRM Protection
Learnyst is an authorized Digital Rights Management (DRM) provider, officially supporting:
-
Google Widevine
-
Microsoft PlayReady
-
Apple FairPlay
These technologies protect your course contents from unauthorized access, downloads, and screen recording - ensuring your content stays secure.
How DRM Works on Web Browsers
When learners watch your course videos through a web browser, Learnyst uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology to protect your content. DRM ensures that only authorized learners can view the videos and that these files cannot be downloaded, copied, or shared outside your platform.
However, on most web browsers, DRM operates in what’s called an L3 (software-based) environment. This means the encryption and decryption happen through the browser software rather than the hardware.
Because of this, no DRM provider — including Google, Microsoft, or Apple — can completely prevent screen capture across all browsers due to operating system and browser-level limitations.
That’s why Learnyst offers two secure deployment options to help you balance convenience and protection
Option A: Allow Playback Only on DRM-Preferred Browsers
Allow learners to access courses only through browsers with stronger DRM enforcement:
-
Windows → Microsoft Edge (PlayReady DRM)
-
macOS → Safari (FairPlay DRM)
Benefits
-
Provides stronger protection than standard browser playback
-
Blocks screen capture on Edge and Safari
Trade-Off
-
Learners using other browsers will be prompted to switch to Edge (Windows) or Safari (Mac).
Option B: Restrict Web Playback and Use Apps Only
Disable all web browser playback and allow learners to access your content only via:
-
Learnyst Android & iOS apps
-
Windows & Mac desktop apps (DRM-enforced)
Benefits
-
Offers the highest level of security
-
Provides comprehensive screen-capture protection
Trade-Off
-
Learners must use the Learnyst mobile or desktop apps to view courses.
Why We Don’t “Blacklist” Screen Recording Tools
Some platforms attempt to block specific screen-recording software — but this approach doesn’t work reliably.
New tools appear frequently, and maintaining blocklists isn’t sustainable.
At Learnyst, we take a smarter approach — enforcing DRM directly at the OS and app level.
This ensures long-term, scalable, and effective protection for your content.
Our Recommendation
Choose your deployment option based on your security needs:
-
Option A: For convenience + good security → Use Edge (Windows) or Safari (macOS).
-
Option B: For maximum protection → Use apps-only access.
We can help you set this up:
-
Enable Edge/Safari enforcement and show you the learner experience, or
-
Configure an apps-only DRM policy for a pilot course and guide you through the rollout.
